speed dating--observations

Angel and I were at Chocolate Factory at Robertson Walk for tea today and we were fortunate enough to observe a speed dating session. It's my first time seeing such a thing take place and it was really amusing! Both Angel and I are guilty of being judgmental snobs, though I have to admit it was very fun watching what was going on and making comments about people's dressing and behaviour.

There were about 24 couples seated in long-table fashion (tables each seating two, joined together) and each girl would start meeting one guy. After 10 minutes, the guys would move one seat down to meet another girl. Some guys dressed quite decently, but there were quite a number who didn't have a clue how to dress. They wore T-shirts that are fit only for sleeping in at home and some tucked in their shirts, sporting the very 'toot' look. So not cool. One guy started smoking even before everything started and we were like oh dear, this is a no-no as many girls don't like guys who smoke. Angel commented that maybe he was nervous and needed a tobacco perk. I spotted someone whom I had worked with before and was disappointed that he didn't do something about his floppy hair because it makes him look super ah beng. Maybe the organiser should have given them each a style bible for men before they went on the date.

Most of the girls looked quite decent, but they were all fashionably late. Don't know if the guys minded! It was interesting to observe how each couple interacted. Some were super engaged the minute they met and Angel spotted a guy dominating the conversation, even catching the attention of the girl next door! Two-timing, tsk tsk. And there was one guy who looked so dejected while waiting for his date to turn up. He slumped in his seat when she arrived and didn't even bother to engage her in conversation. Guys, this is a no-no. A girl must always feel appreciated!

Chocolate Factory served everyone with orange paper cups of drink (probably something chocolate). But oh, this is so UNSEXY for a dating session! Something as significant as this should call for the use of glass at least. Angel noted that such sessions should be held at night when there is candlelight, which makes not so attractive people look vaguely more attractive. Hmm... I dunno about that but I suppose the candlelight does help a bit. Angel also noticed that there was a form that the speed dating coordinator was ticking off. There were 2 columns--'keen' and 'not keen'. I suppose it's for recording who is interested in who. Haha, interesting.

This motley crew of speed daters attracted the attention of not just us two voyeuristic creatures. A lady at the next table actually fished out her digicam and held it high up to try snapping a picture of what was going on! Gosh, not very discreet. But I have to add that observing a speed dating session is highly amusing. Angel was contemplating ordering another dessert just to sit in the cafe longer to observe more. After all, we were seated in a really strategic position :)

Really glad to have caught all the action, though it made us both aware of how judgmental we could be of people's appearance and behaviour. Must guard against this even as we continue to aspire to yuppie-dom and chi-chi-ness :P I still hope to observe another speed dating session, though. It's really really fun and very laughter provoking. Hopefully some people hit it off well today and won't have to end up going for another orchestrated session. I imagine that it must be really stressful for some. Hats off to them for having the guts to do this and be subject to the voyeurism of everyone around!
